Alma Defeats Bethany (W. Va.) in its Holiday Tournament

BETHANY, W.Va. - The Alma College women's basketball team won in its opening game of the Bethany Holiday Tournament in Bethany, W.Va., tonight, defeating the host team 84-73. With the victory, Alma is now 3-1 while Bethany falls to 1-6.

Senior Darcie Philp (Ubly) led the Scots with 20 points and five rebounds while classmate Katey Peacock (Gowen/Greenville) added 18 points, five boards and four assists. Both Ashley Matuzak (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) and Ashley Borcherding (Millington) had 11 points while Erica Philp (Ubly) had 10 points along with six rebounds.

At halftime, Alma led by 10 points and never relinquished the lead in the second half, leading by as many as 17 points with under three minutes to go in the second half.

Alma moves on in tournament play and will face Ohio Dominican at 3 p.m. tomorrow while Bethany faces Methodist in consolation play at 1 p.m.

Charlie Goffnett

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
