Alma Wins Nan Nichols Tournament with 94-74 Victory

The Alma College women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 94-74 victory against Seton Hill Sunday at the Nan Nichols Tournament, hosted by The College of Wooster.

Darcie Philp (Ubly) led the Scots with 28 points and 12 boards while Katey Peacock (Gowen/Greenville) also added a double-double in the effort with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Erica Philp (Ubly) had 19 points for Alma while the Scots had another player in double-figures with Ashley Matuzak (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) scoring 11 points.

The Maroon and Cream were anchored by a strong post-presence, outscoring Seton Hill 38-24 in the paint.

Both Philp sisters had five assists each to round out their nights while Ashley Borcherding (Millington) also had five assists to go with seven points and four rebounds.

As a team, Alma shot 58.5 percent from the field, including an impressive 64.3 percent in the second half.

Leading by the narrow margin of three points at halftime, the Scots got down to business in the second, outscoring Seton Hill 54-37.

For the two-day, season-opening tournament, Darcie Philp was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player while Peacock was named Defensive MVP. Erica Philp also earned All-Tournament accolades.

The Scots return to action with their MIAA opener Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. against Calvin at Alma's Cappaert Gymnasium.

 

Alma College has phenomenal 90 percent placement rates into medical and law schools, compared to a national average of 46.6 percent for medical school placement. More than 90 percent of all Alma graduates report working in full-time positions or attending graduate school within six months of graduation.

Charlie Goffnett

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
