Head Coach Charlie Goffnett speaks at MIAA Pre-Season Media Day
The MIAA women's basketball coaches kicked off the 2005-06 season with media day today.
To open the day, the MIAA pre-season coaches poll was announced and is as follows:
1. Hope (8)
2. Albion
3. Calvin
4. Alma (1)
5. Olivet
6. Tri-State
7. Saint Mary's
8. Kalamazoo
9. Adrian
The 2006 season marks the 25th year of women's basketball in the NCAA
and a celebration of a quarter century of championships in women's
basketball will take place throughout the season. The MIAA will crown
its 27th champion in women's basketball this season.
In the conference, three players who earned first team All-MIAA honors last season return, including Alma College senior Katey Peacock (Gowen/Greenville). The league also returns three second team All-MIAA players, including Alma sophomore Erica Philp (Ubly).
Head coach Charlie Goffnett opening remarks at MIAA media day:
"Alma has three senior starters. Ashley Borcherding (Millington),
a 5-8 shooting guard, is back and was one of the top three-point
shooters in the conference. Katey Peacock led the league in scoring
last year as a junior and is back for us as well.
"Darcie Philp (Ubly) will be a senior starter - she transferred
in from Ferris State mid-season last year. Right now, we're waiting for
Erica Philp to return from volleyball, so we'll have twin tower sisters
in the post. Another key player for us is Ashley Matuzak, a sophomore
from Saginaw Nouvel. She can play both the three and the four.
"Alma will be looking for reinforcements coming off the bench."
In response to coaching another sister combination in Darcie and Erica Philp:
"I think there's an advantage. One of the reasons Darcie decided to
come to Alma was because the younger sister was here and they wanted to
play their final two years together. But they are totally different
people. Darcie's personality and Erica's are diametrically opposed.
Hopefully they will get along together. I know that if one of them
doesn't throw the ball to the other, they'll hear about it more than
with any other combination of players on the floor."
