MIAA Tournament Preview; Scots to Host Tri-State In First Round

ALMA, Mich. - Alma College basketball opens the MIAA Tournament Tuesday (Feb. 22) when the women’s basketball team hosts Tri-State University at 7:30 p.m. in Cappaert Gymnasium while the men’s team will travel to Holland to face Hope College for the second time in four days. The Scots fell to the Flying Dutchmen, 82-76, on Feb. 19 in Holland. Alma now plays for a different outcome when they face the Dutchmen Tuesday.

The women’s team faces Tri-State in Alma after winning both meetings against the Thunder this season. The Scots won the first meeting in Angola, Ind., 77-75 and rolled the Thunder 92-86 in the final meeting of the regular season on Feb. 2 in Alma. The Thunder are 10-15 on the season and 7-9 in MIAA play while the Scots carry a 12-10 record on the season and mirror the Thunder’s record of 7-9 in MIAA action.

The Alma women’s team is led by MIAA regular season scoring leader Katey Peacock (Gowen/Greenville), averaging 17.3 points per game while Tri-State’s Nikki Bergman is sixth in the MIAA, averaging 12.4 points per contest.

Charlie Goffnett

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
