Adrian Outlasts Scots; Maroon and Cream Fall 73-70

ALMA, Mich. - Alma College women's basketball fell to Adrian College Wednesday (Jan. 19), 73-70. The Scots fall to 7-7 (2-6 MIAA) on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 5-10 (2-6 MIAA).

The Scots did not make it to the charity stripe in the first half while the Bulldogs converted on each of their four attempts, proving to make the difference in the end. Both teams shot nearly identical from the field as Alma shot .467 percent and Adrian countered with .464 percent for the game. Alma held the lead on just three occasions throughout the contest and extended the lead to just three points before the Bulldogs countered and went ahead for good with 14 minutes remaining in the second half.

Alma was led by Ashley Borcherding (Millington) and Erica Philp (Ubly) as each player scored 18 points respectively. Katey Peacock (Gowen/Greenville) followed with 16 points of her own while Michelle Dettling (Chelsea) led the way on the boards with seven. Rondi Lounds (St. Johns) posted a season-high five assists to go along with four points.

The Scots return to action Saturday (Jan. 22) when they travel to Hope College for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

 

The Corporation for National and Community Service named Alma College to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll With Distinction for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth. The Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement.

Charlie Goffnett

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
