Scots Pick Up First Conference Win of Season With 77-75 Victory Over Tri-State

ANGOLA, Ind. - Alma College women's basketball (6-4, 1-3 MIAA) picked up its first conference win of the 2004-05 season, defeating Tri-State 77-75 in Angola, Ind., tonight.

The Scots boasted five different players in double figures - the first time this has occured this season for the young Alma team - en route to the conference victory. Freshman Erica Philp (Ubly) led the Scots with 17 points while senior Michelle Dettling (Chelsea) chimed in with 13 of her own in addition to 11 rebounds for a Scot double-double. Rondi Lounds (St. Johns/Grand Rapids C.C.), Ashley Borcherding (Millington) and Abigail Way (Fowlerville) added 11 points each in the win while Ashley Matuzak (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) grabbed 10 rebounds to help the Maroon and Cream.

The Scots return to action Saturday (Jan. 8) when they host Olivet College at 5 p.m., in Alma's Cappaert Gymnasium.

 

More than 100 Alma College students and staff traveled to destinations in Georgia, Tennessee, Florida and Mississippi for service projects during winter break in February 2008. One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
