Scots Claim Alma-St. Louis Rotary Classic Title

ALMA, Mich. - Alma College women's basketball clinched the Alma-St. Louis Rotary Classic championship by defeating the College of Mount St. Joseph, 78-65. Alma's Katey Peacock (Gowen/Greenville) was named the tournament MVP while teammate Ashley Borcherding (Millington) was named to the All-Tournament Team.

With the win, Alma improves to 5-3 on the season and have won three straight, the longest win streak the team has put together in the young 2004-05 season.

Freshman forward Erica Philp (Ubly) led the Scots with 19 points and nine rebounds while seniors Rondi Lounds (St. Johns) added 15 points and Michelle Dettling (Chelsea) chipped in with 14 of her own. Ashley Borcherding posted eight points, six rebounds and three assists in the win.

The Scots held a 30-22 advantage at the half and continued to command the game in the second half, outscoring Mount St. Joseph, 48-43 in the second stanza. For the game, the Scots shot nearly 92 percent from the charity stripe, going 25-for-27 while shooting over 50 percent from the field. The tight defense allowed Mount St. Joseph to shoot just 39 percent from the field.

Alma enjoys a brief hiatus over the holidays before hosting the University of Windsor at 7 p.m., Dec. 30. That game will be broadcast live by WMLM 1520 AM and will be available via the web at www.alma.edu/athletics.

Charlie Goffnett

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
