Scots Take Opening Game of Alma-St. Louis Rotary Classic

ALMA, Mich.
- The Alma College women's basketball team (4-3, 0-2 MIAA) downed Robert Morris College in the opening game of the 10th Annual Alma-St. Louis Rotary Classic Friday (Dec. 17), 77-70, to improve to 4-3 on the season.

Ashley Borcherding (Millington) led all scorers with 22 points, one of three Scots in double figures, going 8-of-11 from the field and hitting 3-of-4 shots from beyond the three-point arc. Katey Peacock (Gowen/Greenville) added 19 points, hitting 7-of-8 from the field, draining one three-pointer. Peacock added four assists and three steals to push the Scots. Ashley Matuzak (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic Central) chipped in with 12 points in the victory and four rebounds. Michelle Dettling (Chelsea) and Erica Philp (Ubly) led the Scots with five rebounds each.

The Scots jumped to an early lead but Robert Morris chipped away to make the score 45-35 at the half. Out of the locker room, the Maroon and Cream struggled through a five minute scoring drought, watching Robert Morris take the lead. The Scots battled back in the late going to take the win, 77-70.

Alma now faces the winner of tonight's 6 p.m. contest pitting Finlandia against Mount St. Joseph's. The winner of that game will face the Scots at 4 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 18) in Alma's Cappaert Gymnasium.   

 

Alma is one of seven Michigan colleges and universities to hold membership in the Omicron Delta Kappa Society, the national leadership society that recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership and exemplary character. The College also has 19 other national departmental honor societies.

Charlie Goffnett

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
