Maroon and Cream Prepare for Alma-St. Louis Rotary Classic

ALMA, Mich. - Alma College basketball plays host to two days of exciting competition again this year as the Scots invite three men's and three women's teams to the Alma-St. Louis Rotary Classic Dec. 17-18 in Cappaert Gymnasium.

The men's team currently boasts a 4-3 overall record after gaining three straight wins against Manchester (71-68), Elmhurst (73-62) and Aurora (85-83). Most recently, the Maroon and Cream were handed an 87-71 loss to Franklin College in the championship game of the Goaltenders-Bankers Classic at Franklin College on Dec. 11. The Scots have enjoyed a week off the hardwood, but have been busy in the classroom as Alma wrapped up its final exams throughout the week.

The men will face St. Clair College at 8 p.m. Friday while Finlandia University and Grace Bible College will kick off action on the men's side at 4 p.m., Friday. Men's consolation and championship games will be played Saturday (Dec. 18) at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.

The women's team is currently an even 3-3 on the season despite holding an 0-2 record in conference action. Alma kicks off the Alma-St. Louis Rotary Classic Friday when they face Robert Morris College at 2 p.m. The women have also enjoyed nearly a full week's break from competition while finishing up final exams and enter tomorrow's contest coming off a 68-44 win against Finlandia University on Dec. 11 in Negaunee, Mich.

Alma made its 2004 MIAA debut against Kalamazoo on Dec. 4 and came away with a 64-53 loss. The Scots dropped their second straight conference game to Calvin on Dec. 8 with a 68-45 loss.

In other women's action, Finlandia University's women's team will face Mount St. Joseph College at 6 p.m. Friday with women’s consolation and championship action set for Saturday at Noon and 4 p.m., respectively.

Saturday's games in which Alma College plays will be broadcast live over the Internet as Greg Siefker and Mike Allen of WMLM 1520 AM call all the action. A link to the Internet broadcast will be available on the Alma College website, www.alma.edu/athletics.

 

Thirty-four percent of Alma students participate in intercollegiate athletics. Alma College competes at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the oldest existing athletic conference in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
