Alma To Face Finlandia in Negaunee Saturday

ALMA, Mich. - Alma College women's basketball travels to Negaunee, Mich., Saturday (Dec. 11) to face the Finlandia Lions at the Negaunee Lakeview Gym. With a 2-3 record, the Scots look to return to .500 Saturday after an MIAA loss to Calvin Dec. 8, 68-45.

Coached by Steve Nordstrom in his third year with the Lions, Finlandia has marched to a 3-4 record to open the season. The Lions enter Saturday’s contest coming off an 87-52 loss to Northern Michigan on Dec. 7.

The Scots boast three players who hail from Michigan’s Upper Penninsula as senior Jesse Roston is a Negaunne native. Senior Mindy VanDamme, a native of Cornell and graduate of Gwinn High School has been a contributor off the bench for the Scots, averaging over 23 minutes and 6.8 points per game, shooting over 43 percent from the field. Fellow Gwinn High graduate and Skandia native sophomore Emily Niemi has also been a key contributor off the bench for the Maroon and Cream. She has five points and 11 rebounds in five games this season.  

The Scots and Lions tip at 3 p.m. at Negaunee's Lakeview Gym.

 

Thirty-four percent of Alma students participate in intercollegiate athletics. Alma College competes at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the oldest existing athletic conference in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
