Alma Drops First MIAA Contest of Season

Box Score

KALAMAZOO, Mich.
- Alma College women's basketball opened its MIAA season Saturday (Dec. 4) against Kalamazoo College, dropping the contest, 64-53 to fall to 2-2 on the season, 0-1 in MIAA action. Freshman Erica Philp (Ubly/Ubly) led the Scots with 14 points and four rebounds while Ashley Matuzak (Saginaw/Nouvel) contributed with 12 points and a team-best eight rebounds.

After trailing 35-23 at halftime, the Scots came back in the second half to out-score the Hornets, but it was not enough for the victory. Alma led by as many as six points early in the contest, but Kalamazoo snagged the lead and did not let it get away, extending its lead to as many as 18 before the buzzer sounded with the Hornets claiming an 11-point advantage.

Philp was perfect from the free-throw line, going 8-for-8 despite going 3-for-11 from the field. As a team, the Scots were held to their lowest point total of the season, scoring less than 60 points for the first time this year. Shooting just 33 percent from the field, it was the Scots' toughest shooting performance of the season after shooting a season-high 53 percent against Northwood to open the season.

Alma returns to MIAA action Dec. 8 when the Maroon and Cream travel to Grand Rapids to face Calvin at 7:30 p.m.

The Corporation for National and Community Service named Alma College to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll With Distinction for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth. The Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement.
