Alma Takes First Win of Season 64-60 Against Concordia

OLIVET, Mich. –
The Alma College women's basketball team grabbed its first win of the season Sunday (Nov. 28), defeating Concordia 64-60 to finish third in the Olivet Classic after falling to Northwood University yesterday, 68-60. The Scots move to an even 1-1 on the season with the victory.

Freshman forward Erica Philp (Ubly/Ubly) led the way for the Scots, recording the team's first individual double-double of the season with 15 points and 17 rebounds, including 10 defensive boards. Senior Michelle Dettling (Chelsea/Chelsea) added 18 points and five rebounds in the effort.

Down to Concordia 34-22 at the half, the Scots came back with a renewed sense of defense in the second half, scoring 42 points and holding Concordia to just 26 points. The Scots went just 2-for-12 from three-point range in the first half but shot 44 percent in the second half, going four-for-nine from beyond the arc.

The Scots continue their road swing as they travel to Grand Rapids tomorrow to face Davenport University at 7 p.m., before opening the home season Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m., in a rematch of today's game against Concordia.

 

Alma’s “green” residence hall, Wright Hall, was completed in January 2005. The modern, 60-bed apartment-style hall features a number of environmentally friendly features, including geothermal heating and cooling, recycled-content ceiling tiles and carpeting, energy-efficient windows, rooftop solar heating panels, energy-efficient showers and washing machines, and a computerized energy monitoring system.

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
