Scots Drop Season Opener to Northwood in Olivet Classic

OLIVET, Mich.
– The Alma College women's basketball team opened its season with a 68-60 loss to Northwood, despite holding a one-point edge at halftime. The Scots struggled to get to the free throw line, getting to the charity stripe just twice in the game, both in the second half. The Scots held the advantage in field goal percentage, shooting 53 percent from the field and holding Northwood to just 39 percent.

Katey Peacock (Gowen/Greenville) led the Maroon and Cream in scoring, posting 14 points while Mindy VanDamme (Cornell/Gwinn) chipped in with 13 and Ashley Matuzak (Saginaw/Nouvel) added 12. Michelle Dettling (Chelsea/Chelsea) put up nine points and nine rebounds to lead the team in that category.

The Scots wrap up play in the Olivet Classic with a 1 p.m. game against Concordia Sunday (Nov. 28).

Charlie Goffnett

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
