Alma College Women's Basketball Announces 2004-05 Schedule

Alma College women's basketball faces a tough 2004-05 schedule.

ALMA, Mich. - The Alma College women's basketball team has released its 2004-05 schedule, head coach Charlie Goffnett announced today.

The Scots open the season at the Olivet Classic Nov. 27-28, where they face Northwood and Concordia. After visiting Davenport University in Grand Rapids to close out November, the Scots open their home season Dec. 1 when they host Concorida College.

Alma then hits the road for three straight road games, opening the MIAA season against Kalamazoo and Calvin, respectively. The Scots look to avenge an early loss to the Hornets in last season's MIAA Tournament and turn to the Knights - last year's league champions. The road swing is highlighted by a Dec. 11, contest against Finlandia College at Negaunee High School in Negaunee, Mich.

"The team is very excited to take our program into Northern Michigan and showcase the level of competition not just of Alma College, but of the MIAA Conference," said head coach Charlie Goffnett. "Facing Finlandia at a neutral site will be unique. The women’s basketball program is looking forward to it."

The Scots return to Cappaert Gymnasium Dec. 17-18, when they host the Alma-St. Louis Rotary Classic, featuring Robert Morris, Finlandia and Mount St. Joseph. The Scots continue their home stand with a contest against the University of Windsor on Dec. 30, and open the 2005 portion of the schedule with a return to conference action against Albion College. Alma closes out the regular season Feb. 19 when the Scots host Kalamazoo.

The Alma College women’s basketball team looks to improve in 2005, despite losing 2004 MIAA MVP Karen Hall to graduation. After posting a 14-11 overall record in 2004, including a fourth place finish in the MIAA (7-7), the Scots and Goffnett are confident they will enjoy success this season.

"Although this is definitely a challenging schedule, I know this team will rise to the challenge," said Goffnett. "The MIAA will be very strong this season - we have to come ready to play. The Alma-St. Louis Rotary Classic is a strong tradition and we always anticipate some great games over those two days. Overall, this is a demanding schedule but this team will undoubtedly rise to the challenge."

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term ’08, students toured cultural sites in Argentina, studied lizards in Jamaica, analyzed World War II topics at the British National Archives in London, performed music in Italy, and examined the natural wonders of New Zealand.
