Karen Hall of Alma College is Kovalchik Scholar Award Recipient

Alma College graduate Karen Hall of Sparta has been named the recipient of the MIAA’s Sheila Wallace Kovalchik Women Scholar Award. First presented in 2003, the award recognizes a senior woman from an MIAA member college who has excelled in academics and athletics and displayed outstanding leadership qualities. The award honors Sheila Kovalchik who served as MIAA commissioner from 1991-2002.

Hall was a four-year letterwinner in basketball. Captain of this past year’s team, she was voted the MIAA’s most valuable player and received Division III All-Region and All-America honors. She established several Alma and MIAA records and this past season was the second-leading scorer in NCAA Division III. She was a psychology and Spanish major and in addition to participating in intercollegiate sports was active in campus and community activities. She is the daughter of Dennis and Judy Hall of Sparta and a 2001 graduate of Grand Rapids West Catholic High School.

The other nominees were Danielle Hobbs of Adrian (Madison Heights), Karen Dumas of Albion (Jackson), Katie Corner of Calvin (Grand Rapids), Lauren Jensen of Hope (Manistee), Carrie Brankiewicz of Kalamazoo (Southfield), Shannon McHugh of Olivet (Manistique), and Erin Sullivan of Saint Mary’s (Schaumburg, Ill.).

 

In the more than 100 years since its founding, Alma has stayed true to its roots by keeping its Scottish heritage alive. Today, Alma features a marching band clad in Kilts, a Scottish dance troupe, student pipers and its own tartan. Each year, the College hosts the Alma Highland Festival and Games, which feature traditional Scottish games and revelry.

Charlie Goffnett

Charlie Goffnett

One of the top Division III coaches in the nation, Charlie Goffnett has built the Alma women's basketball program into a national powerhouse. With three MIAA titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and one national championship under his belt, Goffnett is one of the most accomplished coaches in the nation.

Charlie Goffnett began coaching the women's golf team in 1990. As head coach, he has established a competitive program that is always on or near the top of the MIAA standings. In 1997, the Scots captured their third MIAA title under Goffnett's guidance.
