Scots name Sarah Dehring Head Volleyball Coach

Sarah Dehring has been named Head Volleyball Coach at Alma College. Dehring joins the Scots after spending the 2010 season as an assistant coach at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

“We are very excited to announce the hiring of Sarah Dehring as our new volleyball coach,” said Alma Athletic Director John Leister. “She is a very energetic and talented young coach and everyone involoved in the interview process believed she was a great fit to take over our volleyball program. We believe Sarah can take our already successful team to even greater heights.”

Dehring inherits a Scots squad that has won 57 matches over the past three seasons, including 35 MIAA contests. In addition, Alma has finished in the top three of the league in those three campaigns.

“I am thrilled to be the next Alma College volleyball coach,” said Dehring. “I am anxious to get to work and add to what the program has done over the past few seasons. We have a great foundation in place and my goal is to bring an MIAA championship to this campus. I want to thank everyone involved in the interview process for having the confidence in me for this position.”

While at Iowa Western, the team finished ninth at the NJCAA Nationals in 2010 and Dehring was instrumental in the recruitment of athletes, including international players. She was the school’s summer camp coordinator and monitored the academic progress of the student athletes.

Before Iowa Western, Dehring was the assistant coach at Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana. During her tenure at the school, the head coach delivered a baby, giving many of the head coach duties and responsibilities to Dehring. She developed a strength and conditioning program for the school and was in charge of the day to day activities of the program.

Dehring has served as director for various camps in Michigan and Pennsylvania since 2001 and also was a graduate assistant at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wisconsin from 2007 to 2008. Other experience includes stops at Arizona Western College and Mackinac Island Public School.

She earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Ferris State in 2004 and then acquired her Master of Arts in Counseling from Lakeland College in 2008. While earning her Masters, Dehring was able to council student athletes regarding personal, academic and career issues, helping them both on and off the court.
