MIAA Announces Volleyball All-League teams and Alma gets two players honored

The MIAA announced Saturday evening the 2009 All-MIAA Volleyball Teams and Alma College had two players honored for their play this season. Jr. S Hannah Hewitt (Alanson, MI/Harbor Light Christian) was named to the first team, while So. MH Shelby Gray (Bloomfield Hills, MI/W. Bloomfield) earned second team honors.

For the season, Hewitt finished third in the MIAA with 640 assists for an average of 10.00 per game, while Gray ended the 2009 campaign sixth in the league in kills with 190, 2.97 per game. The Scots finished third in the league in 2009 and lost to eventual tournament champion Calvin College Friday night, 0-3, in the MIAA Semi-Finals at host Hope College.

Alma College students have the ability to design their own area of academic concentration, with the assistance of a faculty advisor, to meet specific educational or career goals. In recent years, students have graduated with Programs of Emphasis majors in such fields as arts management, archaeology and anthropology, environmental policy and community advocacy, Foreign Service and international law, and music technology and digital media.

Cheyenne Luzynski

Cheyenne Luzynski

Alma College Athletics appointed Cheyenne Luzynski as head volleyball coach beginning with the 2007 spring non-traditional season. Luzynski is the eighth head coach in the 31-year history of Alma College volleyball.

Luzynski has served as an assistant volleyball coach for two seasons and has led the junior varsity program during that time. She has served as an assistant coach with the men’s basketball program, leading its junior varsity program and is an assistant coach with the men’s and women’s track and field teams at Alma College. Additionally, Luzynski has been named an assistant Athletic Director and serves as the Senior Woman Administrator within the department.
