SCOTS VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS TRINE UNIVERSITY 3-1 AT CAPPAERT GYMNASIUM

The Alma Volleyball team looked to rebound on Saturday from a tough MIAA loss Friday night at Calvin College, when they won the first game of the match but dropped the next three for the loss.

Today brought a new challenge as league rival Trine University came to town and the Scots managed a reversal of fortune on the Thunder, as the visitors won the first game, but lost the next three. Alma won 3-1, to improve to 7-8 (4-3 MIAA) on the season, while Trine is now 9-6 (3-3 MIAA) for 2009. The scoring for the day for Alma was 20-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-22.

Three Alma players notched double digits in kills in a balanced attack - So. MH Shelby Gray (18), So. OH Beth Caldwell (14) and Fr. OH Katie Bourbonnais (13). The Scots were led in assists by season-leader Jr. S Hannah Hewitt, who had 56 of the team's 59 on the afternoon. Jr. OH Stephanie Bradshaw had 27 defensive digs, while Caldwell contributed 21.

For the visiting Thunder, OH Abby Rothballer had 14 kills, while MH Betsy Irwin was credited with ten. S Sarah Radekin led the way with 37 assists and also was second with 16 defensive digs - DS Andrea DiRuzza had 19.

Alma will continue league play on Wednesday evening, when they play host to MIAA opponent Adrian College. Start time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Cappaert Gymnasium.

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term '09, students toured cultural sites in Peru, studied alternative energy in Sweden, analyzed theatre and dance in London, and examined Native American culture at the Crazy Horse Memorial in South Dakota.

Cheyenne Luzynski

Alma College Athletics appointed Cheyenne Luzynski as head volleyball coach beginning with the 2007 spring non-traditional season. Luzynski is the eighth head coach in the 31-year history of Alma College volleyball.

Luzynski has served as an assistant volleyball coach for two seasons and has led the junior varsity program during that time. She has served as an assistant coach with the men’s basketball program, leading its junior varsity program and is an assistant coach with the men’s and women’s track and field teams at Alma College. Additionally, Luzynski has been named an assistant Athletic Director and serves as the Senior Woman Administrator within the department.
