SCOTS VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS OLIVET 3-0 IN MIAA HOME OPENER

The Alma Volleyball team played its home MIAA opener Friday evening and defeated league rival Olivet College at Cappaert Gymnasium, by a score of 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-21). The Scots improved to 4-2 in 2009 (1-1 MIAA), while the Comets dropped to 3-3 (1-1 MIAA).

“I am pleased with the way our girls played tonight after a tough loss at Hope on Tuesday,” said Head Coach Cheyenne Luzynski. “We knew we had to come out strong against an opponent which was coming off of a league win. The Comets played hard too, but our team was persistent and tough when it had to be – a nice win for us. Tomorrow, we play a perennial league power in Saint Mary’s, and we are excited for the challenge.”

Luzynski’s squad came out hard and fast against Olivet, earning 12 kills in the first game on its way to the 25-13 win. Olivet played hard in the second game and the Scots had to earn the hard-fought 25-20 game that was in doubt until the end. The third and deciding game, Alma maintained a lead, but the Comets fought back to make it interesting until the Scots closed it out by a score of 25-21 for the 3-0 match win.

After playing at Saint Mary’s on Saturday, the Scots are off until Wednesday, when they travel south to take on league foe Albion in a 6:30 p.m. match. Alma will then participate in the Border Battle Tournament on September 18 and 19 in Wittenberg, OH.
