VOLLEYBALL: Scots defeat Albion, Earn First MIAA Win

Alma, Mi.- The Alma College Volleyball team hosted Albion College in MIAA action and took home the win 3-1.

The Scots came out strong, winning the first game 30-20 in dominating fashion. The Brits battled back and took the second game 27-30. However, the Scots were hungry for their first MIAA win and closed out the match winning the third and fourth games by the scores 30-20 and 30-21.

Leading the way for the Scots was junior Kim Gillhespy (Cedar Springs/Cedar Springs) wh recorded 18 kills, seven digs, and three blocks in the match. Rogers City junior, Becky Bruning, also went to work recording 14 kills and two digs in the match. Freshman setter, Hannah Hewitt (Harbor Springs/Harbor Light) had another solid game for the Scots as she had 54 assists, five digs, and three aces. Senior Mandy Risch (Cadillac/Cadillac) showed great leadership for the Scots and led the team in digs with 19.

The win improves the Scots to 5-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play. Alma will travel to St. Mary's College tomorrow to take on the Belles in a game scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.

Cheyenne Luzynski

Alma College Athletics appointed Cheyenne Luzynski as head volleyball coach beginning with the 2007 spring non-traditional season. Luzynski is the eighth head coach in the 31-year history of Alma College volleyball.

Luzynski has served as an assistant volleyball coach for two seasons and has led the junior varsity program during that time. She has served as an assistant coach with the men’s basketball program, leading its junior varsity program and is an assistant coach with the men’s and women’s track and field teams at Alma College. Additionally, Luzynski has been named an assistant Athletic Director and serves as the Senior Woman Administrator within the department.
