VOLLEYBALL: Scots Defeat Wooster in First Game of Wooster Tournament

Following a tough conference loss to Calvin on Wednesday, the Scots travelled to Wooster College to play in the Wooster Tournament this weekend and defeated the hosting school in their first match, 3-1, by the scores: 30-28, 30-23, 23-30, 30-21.

Head Coach Cheyenne Luzynski credited the win to excellent defensive play led by Jennifer Basset-Payne (Traverse City/Traverse City St. Francis) who led the Scots with 30 digs.

Leading the way on the offensive for Alma College was Cedar Springs junior Kim Gillhespy who had 12 kills, six blocks, and eleven digs. Becky Bruning (Rogers City/Rogers City) added eleven kills and three blocks, and freshman Hannah Hewitt (Harbor Springs/Harbor Light) was setting the table all night as she recorded 43 assists.

The Scots will take on Mt. Union later tonight.

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble performed at the prestigious Centrum Jazz Festival, an international festival in Port Townsend, Wash., in July 2007. Alma was the only college group invited to perform. “It’s a huge honor,” says faculty director Dave Zerbe. “You can’t apply to perform there; they seek you out.”
