Head Coach Cheyenne Luzynski
Luzynski is entering her third year as Alma College’s Head Volleyball Coach. In her first season with the Scots, Luzynski led the young team to an 8-22 record, rebounding to a 22-9 record and a third place finish in the 2008 season. Much of the 2008 success was led by a competitive senior class and 3rd-Team All-American, Kim Gillhespy. In the 31 seasons of Scots volleyball, Alma has compiled an overall record of 541-404.
Luzynski hopes to continue the positive success for the Scots in the 2009 season. She has been honing her coaching skills in the off-season by serving as an assistant coach for the USA Volleyball Lakeshore region High Performance program and several high school and college camps.
Luzynski has been involved with the High Performance program for two years working with some of the best volleyball athletes in the state of Michigan. Luzynski represented Alma College and the Lakeshore Region at the 2009 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Luzynski is an Assistant Athletic Director and serves as the Senior Woman’s Administrator. Cheyenne’s coaching career started nine years ago as a track and field coach at Fulton-Middleton H.S and evolved when she came to Alma in the fall of 2005. She was an assistant coach for volleyball, Men’s basketball, track & field and was the Director of the Stone Recreation Center.
Aside from her coaching positions she finds time to stay involved with the Alma College Community. Luzynski was recently recognized for her Oustanding Commitement to Service. When she’s not coaching she is facilitating leadership camps for Alma College’s Center for Responsible Leadership program or leading students on Alternative Break service trips around the U.S.
In the community Luzynski mentors a fifth grader through the Mentor Plus program at Alma Public schools. She stays motivated through her love of coaching and positively influencing young women to live with a healthy mind, body and soul. She is actively involved in the Girls on the Run program in the area that works with third-fifth graders on issues of self-esteem, body image and healthy choices. She serves as a Board of Director for the local Girls on the Run program and finds time to compete in running races including the 2007 Boston Marathon.
Cheyenne graduated summa cum laude from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. While at CMU, Luzynski competed on the Club Volleyball team serving as combined president/coach/captain during the time and led the team to fifth and ninth place National finishes. She is currently tackling her Masters of Science in Sport Administration from CMU and writing her thesis on the competitive advantages of mental toughness training for volleyball athletes. Her graduate work will be complete in December of 2009.
Luzynski hopes to pursue a Doctorate in Sport Psychology in the near future. Another one of Luzynski’s goals is to take the 2010 Alma College Scots to Nicaragua on a team tour. The tour will be focused on team bonding, competition, service and travel. The trip will be centered on leadership, service, living with integrity, and strengthening the bond of ACVB.
Alma College Athletics appointed Cheyenne Luzynski as head volleyball coach beginning with the 2007 spring non-traditional season. Luzynski is the eighth head coach in the 31-year history of Alma College volleyball.
