ALMA JAVELIN THROWER LAUREN FORREST COMPETED AT DIII TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2009 NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships were held May 21-23 at Marietta College.

Alma College Javelin Thrower Lauren Forrest (Laingsburg, MI/Laingsburg) participated for the Scots. She threw representing Alma on Thursday, May 21, and threw 34.97m. The top nine of the 19 athletes moved on to the Finals in the event.

Forrest set a new school record in 2009 and hit the provisional mark in the Javelin when she threw 40.96m at Northwood University on April 18.

A total of 688 participants competed in the championships.  Student-athletes qualified for the championships by reaching the automatic and provisional standards established for each event.

The memory and spiritual ideals of the late Bishop Thomas Makarios remain alive in a figurative sculpture that was dedicated in May 2009 near the center of campus. The Bishop, professor of religious studies at Alma for 25 years, was founder of the American Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Church of India and the first Metropolitan Bishop of Canada, United Kingdom and Europe, and South Africa.

Terry Smith

Smith graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S. in Physical Education in 1984. After graduating, Smith got his start in coaching when he was the boy’s basketball coach at Fulton High School while working as a teacher at Ithaca High School. From there he moved to Cedar Springs High School were he coached and taught and won his first district championship in 1987.

The following year, Coach Smith got his first taste of coaching in the college ranks when he was an assistant men’s basketball coach at Ferris State University and was part of the team that won a GLIAC Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA DII Tournament.

After a year at FSU, Coach Smith left for Lake Superior State University where he served for three years as an assistant coach before being promoted to the head coach position in 1991. In five years time, Coach Smith had turned around the LSSU program. In 1996 his team won the first League Championship for LSSU since joining the GLIAC in 1978. During this time, Coach Smith also earned his M.A. in Physical Education from Central Michigan University.
