Alma, Mi.- The Alma College Athletic Department is excited to announce that they will be holding the first ever True Team Scoring conference Track & Field meet in NCAA history on April 12th, 2008.

True Team Scoring is a unique scoring method that awards points to every participant in an event. This method makes every event important to every team and provides a more accurate reflection of how teams, from top to bottom, stack up against each other.

On April 12th, the Alma College Scots will host six other Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association teams for their first Jamboree of the season. This Jamboree will count for half of the MIAA Championship and will be scored using the following method:

Individual Event Scoring: (3) participants from each school provide for 21 competitors in each event, thus points will be handed out from 21-1 in descending order; i.e. 1st place 21, 2nd place 20.

Relays: Relays will be scored in a likewise manner, points being awarded from 42-6 in increments of six; i.e. 1st place – 42, 2nd place 36.

“We are excited for the opportunity to host this ground breaking event,” commented first year Alma College Head Coach Gordon Aldrich. “True Team Scoring makes every student athlete important to the the team and each of their efforts count towards the championship. To win the meet in this format, a team must be deep and every athlete must give it their all even if it means to finish 17th instead of 19th because those two points could be the difference.”

The Meet is set to begin an 9:00 a.m. in a rolling format with the following schedule:

Running Events:
10K Run – 9:00 a.m.
3K Steeple Chase
4x100 Relay

Alma College Director of Athletics John Leister is also looking forward to the unique event, “We always tell our athletes that they need to compete at 100% every time they step on the field, court, or track. This method of scoring not only takes into account a team’s most outstanding athletes, but also the ones who are working hard to do the very best they can even though they know they won’t finish in the top ten.” He also added, “Coach Aldrich wanted to make this event happen from the day we hired him. He was able to convince the majority of the MIAA coaches that this is a good thing, and now on April 12th Alma College will be the first to host an event like this. He has done a great job.”

Alma College will also host the MIAA Field Day on May 1, 2 that will count for the other half of the Conference Championship.
