TRACK & FIELD: Pair of Scots Earn All-American Honors
This year marked the return of Alma College to the NCAA National Championships in Track & Field after a very long absence. Representing the Scots was a junior sprinter and a freshman triple jumper, both of whom had been dominating performers throughout the season, and both of whom competed well for the Scots at Nationals.
Kyle Percival (Lansing/Waverly) won the MIAA Championship in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.97 sec. In the qualifying round of that field day, Percival ran his personal best with a time of 10.58 sec. At Nationals, Percival finished second in his qualifying heat with a time of 10.69 sec and finished eight overall with a time of 10.92. This year's National Champion won the race with a time of 10.56 seconds, only two hundredths faster than Percival's best time- giving hope to what could potentially be a fantastic senior season to look forward to. Percival will now shift his attention to football where he is a starting cornerback for the Scots and is leaned upon for his play making ability on that side of the ball.
Frankie Brun (Oscoda/Culver Academies) has had a fantastic freshman season for the Scots competing in the Triple Jump. Brun, who claimed to be only average in high school, came to Alma and learned that he was a natural at the Triple Jump. Earlier this year Brun broke the Alma College record when he set a mark of 47-9 1/2, while winning the Aquinas Invitation. As outstanding as Frankie has been all year, he saved his best for Nationals when he broke 48 feet recording a distance of 48-0 3/4, finishing eighth, and setting a new Alma College Record under the biggest spot light of the year. Like Percival, Brun also competes in fall sports as he is a midfielder/forward for the men's soccer team.
The future looks bright for both of these athletes. Look forward to seeing much more about them in the years to come as they continue to compete hard and represent the Scots with pride.
