TRACK & FIELD: Alma Women Get Key Wins Saturday Over Albion, Olivet; Men's Team Falls to Albion, Narrowly to Olivet

Alma College women defeated Albion 98-94 and Olivet 137-37 in MIAA track and field action Saturday. The men fell to Albion 123-62 and to Olivet 99-91.
For the women, Tara Bjorne won the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.16while Katie Porter was third with a time of 13.79. In the 200 meter dash, Alma took second, third and fourth as Kristina Fuehring, Bjorne and Ashleigh Ocenasek took those spots, respectively.
Fuehring won the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:03.53 and Ocenasek was second with a time of 1:04.53. In the 800, Kyla Crawford was second with a time of 2:37.60. In the 3000 steeplchase, EJ Hemerling was third with a time of 13:13.77. Alma's 4x100 relay team took the top spot in that event with a time of 52.14. The 4x400 team took top honors as well with its time of 4:20.15.
In individual field events, Andrea Richardson continued her strong season, picking up individual honors in the high jump with a mark of 1.58 meters. She was also first in the pole vault with a height of 2.74 meters, followed by teammates Katie Porter (2.59m) and Stephanie Simon (2.59m). Bjorne was first in the long jump with a distance of 4.68 meters, followed by Crawford's jump of 4.61 meters. Bjorne continued her stand out season with a win in the triple jump, making a jump of 9.70 meters. Teammates Erika Sherwood and Kyla Crawford finished second and third, respectively.
In shot put action, Caitlin Fowler recorded a throw of 10.49 meters for a first place finish while in the javelin, Natalie Cordes was second with a throw of 31.79 meters and Sherwood was third with a 29.55 mark.
For the men, Kyle Percival was the fastest man of the day, running the 100 meter dash in 10.84 to finish first. He was second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.60. The 5000 meter run saw Steve Kuhlman finish third with a time of 16:54.80. In hurdles action, Nathan Garvin was third with a time of 16.13 in the 110 hurdles. The 3000 steeplechase saw Matt Foley finish in a time of 11:51.50 for a third place standing.
In the field events, Chris Francis continued his strong sophomore season with a second place finish in the high jump with a height of 1.78 meters and in pole vault competition, Garvin was second with a height of 3.66 meters. In the long jump, Derek Curry was third with a jump of 5.99 meters, followed by Francis with a jump of 5.91 meters. Frankie Brun and Curry went one-two in triple jump, with Brun taking top honors with a jump of 12.97 and Curry finishing with a jump of 11.93.
In discus, Pat Tompkins was third with a throw of 40.83 meters and in javelin, Brandon Smith was third with a throw of 43.58 meters.
Alma is scheduled to return to action Apr. 23 when it participates in an MIAA dual meet.
