MIAA Best Lists Released; Percival Top in 100 Meter Dash

The MIAA has released its first best lists of the season for men's and women's track and field and junior Kyle Percival (Lansing/Waverly) is the fastest man in the conference. Percival ran the 100 meter dash i 10.95. The next competitor is Albion's Nick Kyriakopoulos with a time of 11.04.

The 100 meter dash has Derek Curry (Peck) 11th with a time of 11.74 and Eric Braun (Hale) 14th with a time of 11.93. For the women, Tara Bjorne (Manistique) is third in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.16 as Olivet's Jami Acker is the fastest in the league through March 31 with a time of 12.91. Katie Porter of Alma is fifth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.36.

Percival is ranked third in the league in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.70. Albion's Michael Nyika is first with a time of 22.04. Curry and Braun both rank in the top 20 in the league in the 200 as well. In 400 meter action, Frankie Brun (Oscoda/Culver Academies) is 10th with a time of 53.33. Chris Francis (Lapeer/East) is 16th with a time of 54.24. For the women int he 200 meter, Bjorne and Kristina Fuehring (Hart) are fifth and sixth, respectively, while the 400 meter has Fuehring sixth and Ashleigh Ocenasek (Perry) seventh.

In the 10K, Steve Kuhlman is fifth with a time of 34:45.76. In hurdles, Matt Edwards (West Branch/Ogemaw Heights) is ranked 13th with a time of 17.62 while the 400 hurdles have Edwards with a time of 1:02.83 in eighth place. In women's hurdles action, Rachel Rochefort (Bad Axe) is third in 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.94 - Calvin's Sarah Wittingen is first with a time of 15.07. In the 400 hurdles, Megan Lapine (Harbor Beach) is fifth wth a time of 1:15.50.

The 3000 steeplechase has Erin Hemerling (Hastings) fourth with a time of 12:43.02.

In field events, Chris Francis is tied for 10th with a height of 5-10 in the high jump while Brun is tied for 12th with a mark of 5-08 in the same event. Francis is also third in the MIAA with a mark of 20-04.25 in the long jump. Curry is fifth in the event with a mark of 20-02.55. Brun is also in the top 10, ninth with a mark of 19-08.25. Brun is also fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 41.09.25. Curry is sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 39-04.50.

In women's field events, Andrea Richardson (Mayville) is fourthi n the high jmp with a top mark of 5-04.00. Phoebe Renne is eighth with a mark of 4-08.00. In the pole vault, Richardson is tied for fourth with a top mark of 10-00.00. In long jump action, Bjorne is second behind Calvin's Julie Bratt. Bjorne's top mark through this point of the season is 15-11.00. Katie Porter (Cheboygan) is fifth in the event with a mark of 15-01.25. Bjorne is also one of the league's toughest competitors in the triple jump as she is second with a mark of 33-01.75.

In throwing events, Dustin Kelly is seventh in the MIAA with a distance of 41.07.00 in the shot put. In the discus, Pat Tompkins (Fenwick) is sixth with a distance of 130-08. Tompkins is sixth in the hammer throw with a distance of 91-02. In the javelin, Brandon Smith (Mikado/Alcona) is Alma's top performer with a throw of 144-00 in the javelin.

Throwing events for the women have Caitlin Fowler (St. Louis) ninth with a throw of 32-07.50. In discus, Christina Hall is ninth with a throw of 105-09 and Fowler is 10th with a throw of 104-05. In the hammer throw, Nikki Westerveer (Manton) is third with a distance of 80-04. Finally, in the javelin Molly Steere (St. Louis) is fifth in the standings with a long throw of 98-07. Natalie Cordes (Barton City/Alcona) is sixth with a distance of 93-10.

Alma is scheduled to return to action next Saturday, Apr. 14, when it runs agaist Albion and Tri-State.

Coach Profile

Gordon Aldrich

Gordon Aldrich was a late addition to the Alma College Coaching Staff in the summer of 2007. Coach Aldrich has joined the Alma College Family as the Cross Country and Track and Field Head Coach.

During his 26 years as a varsity Boy’s and Girl’s Cross Country Coach, Aldrich has won a Girls Open State Championship (1978), a Girls State Championship (1995), two Boy’s State Championships (1994, 1997), and was Runner-up on seven other occasions. During the same time, Aldrich coached teams to 17 conference championships, was nominated for the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association Coach of the Year 12 times for cross country, and walked away with the award four times (1994, 1995, 1996, and 1998). He was also named the Boy’s Cross Country National Coach of the Year in 1999 by the National Federation Interscholastic Coaches Association.

Aldrich was also honored with Michigan High School Coaches Association Track Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1998, and has received the Charles Sweeney Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame Track and Field Award.
