Frankie Brun Wins Triple Jump at CMU's Jack Skoog Open

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Alma College continued indoor track and field action at the Jack Skoog Open, hosted by Central Michigan University. The open featured teams from CMU, Aquinas, Northwood, Northern Michigan, Ferris State, Lake Superior State in addition to other runners.

Andrea Richardson (Mayville) and Kristina Fuehring (Hart) were key contributors for the Scots on the women's side while Frankie Brun (Oscoda/Culver Academies) and Chris Francis (Lapeer/East) paced the Scots on the men's team.

In women's high jump, Richardson finished seventh overall with a final measure of 1.53 meters. She was second overall in the pole vault with a height of 2.89 meters.

In the women's 60 meter dash, Tara Bjorne (Manistique) finished 13th overall and Katie Porter (Cheboygan) 17th. In the 200 meter dash, Kristina Fuehring finished 21st with a time of 28.59 and in the 400 meter dash Fuehring finished 11th with a time of 65.03. In the shot put, Caitlin Fowler (St. Louis) finsihed 14th with a throw of 10.61 meters.

In men's action, Frankie Brun was 29th in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.83, prior to taking top honors in the triple jump with a jump of 13.42 meters. Chris Francis was fifth in the long jump with a distance of 6.12 meters while Derek Curry (Peck) was sixth with a distance of 6.09. Pat Tompkins (Fenwick) was eighth in the shot put with a throw of 13.04.

Derek Curry was 20th in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.52 with Eric Braun (Hale) and Matt Edwards (West Branch/Ogemaw Heights) finishing behind him tied for 21st and 23rd, respectively. Dane Curth and Nate Weirauch had strong finishes in the 400 meter dash while Edwards turned in a ninth place performance in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.65.

Alma returns to action in its outdoor season March 24 at the Emory Invitational in Atlanta, Ga.





 

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble performed at the prestigious Centrum Jazz Festival, an international festival in Port Townsend, Wash., in July 2007. Alma was the only college group invited to perform. “It’s a huge honor,” says faculty director Dave Zerbe. “You can’t apply to perform there; they seek you out.”

Chris Hamstra

Coach Hamstra graduated from Hope College in 2004 with a B.A. in Accounting. During his time at Hope, Hamstra was a four year student-athlete, received All-MIAA honors and was also named to the All-American team. Hamstra was also a member of MIAA Championship teams and brings that winning attitude and work ethic to his new position.

After graduation, Hamstra served as an assistant coach for Hope’s Swimming and Diving Program under Dr. John Patnott. Hamstra credits Dr. Patnott with helping him to understand the science of swimming and also the importance of season long work out plans. “As an assistant in his program, I was given the freedom to implement my own workouts into the system, providing me with insight into what it takes to develop season long plans."
