Scots Finish Third at Roanoke Invitational

ALMA, Mich. - Alma College track and field traveled to the Roanoke (Va.) Invitational March 19 as the women’s team finished third while the men took home fifth place. Alma’s Greg Jacobs (Traverse City) took both the men’s pole vault and javelin titles while Phoebe Renne (Chippewa Hills) and Erin Wicker (Birmingham) finished second in the women’s high jump and shot put, respectively.

For the women, Otterbein College took home championship honors with 150 points while host Roanoke came in second with 140 points. Alma was third with 91 points.

The Scots were led by a strong contingent, including:
Sarah Harrelson’s (Suttons Bay) second place finish in the javelin (34.42m/112-11) and 100 meter dash time of 14.00, good for sixth place. Tara Bjorne (Manistique) finished fifth in both the long jump (4.67m/15-04.00) and triple jump (9.78m/32-01.00) while finishing in eighth place in the 100 meter dash (14.43). Kyla Crawford (Burton) finished fourth in the long jump (4.71m/15-05.50) and fifth in the 400 meter dash (1:07.16) while distance runners Megan Gibson (Alma) and Andrea Miller (Cadillac) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 10,000 meter and 5,000 meter runs. Phoebe Renne finished second in the high jump with a mark of 1.5m/4-11.00, while Erin Wicker was second in the shot put with a mark of 11.06m/36-03.50. Erin Hemerling (Hastings) rounded out top performers with a third place finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase (13:45.41).

The Scots return to action March 25 at the Dick Small Invitational in Defiance, Ohio.

Chris Hamstra

Chris Hamstra

Coach Hamstra graduated from Hope College in 2004 with a B.A. in Accounting. During his time at Hope, Hamstra was a four year student-athlete, received All-MIAA honors and was also named to the All-American team. Hamstra was also a member of MIAA Championship teams and brings that winning attitude and work ethic to his new position.

After graduation, Hamstra served as an assistant coach for Hope’s Swimming and Diving Program under Dr. John Patnott. Hamstra credits Dr. Patnott with helping him to understand the science of swimming and also the importance of season long work out plans. “As an assistant in his program, I was given the freedom to implement my own workouts into the system, providing me with insight into what it takes to develop season long plans."
