Maroon and Cream Fifth at Roanoke Invitational

ALMA, Mich. - Alma College track and field traveled to the Roanoke (Va.) Invitational March 19 as the women’s team finished third while the men took home fifth place. Alma’s Greg Jacobs (Traverse City) took both the men’s pole vault and javelin titles while Phoebe Renne (Chippewa Hills) and Erin Wicker (Birmingham) finished second in the women’s high jump and shot put, respectively.

For the men, Thiel College took home top honors with 147 points while Bridgewater, Roanoke and Otterbein came in ahead of the Scots, who scored 96 points.

The Scots were led by a mix of youth and leadership, including:
Kyle Percival’s (Lansing/Waverly) fourth place finish in the 100 meter dash (11.69) after a time of 11.49 in the prelims. Percival took home eighth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.33 while Derek Curry (Peck) was 10th with a time of 24.61. Kyle Hill (Midland) was the top Scot in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:08.49 while Joe Whitman (Davison) took fourth in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:16.25 while Hill was seventh with a time of 4:22.27 in the same event.

The 5000 meter run saw Whitman and Dirk Callahan (Fowler, Ind.) take third and fourth spots with times of 16:32.00 and 16:35.84, respectively. Matt Foley (Flint) took second in the 10,000 meter (38:52.25) while Callahan took runner-up honors in the 3000 meter steeplechase (10:42.93). In the high jump, Chris Francetic (Merrill) took home second (1.83m/6-00.00) while Greg Jacobs (Traverse City) earned champion honors in the pole vault (3.65m/12-00.00) and javelin (55.28m/181-04) and fourth in the shot put (13.28m/43-07.00).

The Scots return to action March 25 at the Dick Small Invitational in Defiance, Ohio.

Judd Folske

Judd Folske

Judd Folske is entering his first year as Alma College Head Baseball Coach in the 2007-2008 season after spending two years as an assistant coach with the program. Coach Folske joined the Maroon and Cream in the fall of 2005 after stops at NCAA Division I Central Michigan University, and stints at Div. II schools Saginaw Valley State University and Ferris State University. He also serves the athletic department as assistant athletic director.

While head coach of the CMU Chippewas, Folske posted a 131-98 mark. In 2000, he finished in a tie for first in the MAC conference with a record of 41-17 (18-8). Folske retired after the 2003 season at CMU, and went to work as an assistant at SVSU, where he worked in that capacity for two seasons.
