2005 Season Preview
The Alma College men’s track and field team, under the direction of second-year head coach Matt Chovanec, looks to improve this season with 2004 MIAA javelin champion Greg Jacobs returning and the addition of several quick runners in sprints. The Scots return Jacobs, distance runners Joe Whitman and Dirk Callahan, mid-distance runners Rory Wildner and Paul Notolli and sprinter Matt Lambourn to lead the way for the Maroon and Cream. Anticipated to again lead the conference, Albion and Calvin will be the Scots’ toughest match-ups. In the off-season, Alma has added transfer Kyle Percival who has shown outstanding quickness in the indoor season. The Scots also welcome Derek Curry in sprints and long jump and Drew Gillespie in sprints.
Chovanec expects Jacobs to be a force in the conference again while looking for good things from the sprinters after adding some depth in the off-season.
The Scots lost last season’s leading scorer, Gavin Cornwell, to graduation. Cornwell was the MIAA Champion in the long jump in addition to his leadership skills for the Scots.
The 2005 season will be one in which the Scots must begin to prove themselves in the conference as a young contingent will have to make up for a lack of depth in many of the events for the Maroon and Cream.
The Scots open the outdoor season March 19 at the Roanoke Invitational and continue March 25 with the Dick Small Invitational in Defiance, Ohio. In addition to the MIAA season, the Scots will participate in the Huntington Relays and the Hillsdale Relays throughout the season.
