Alma Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Hosted Hope College on Saturday

The Alma Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Team hosted Hope College on Saturday at the newly renovated McClure Natatorium and had a very positive afternoon. Despite the Flying Dutchmen and Flying Dutch having more swimmers, the Scots held their own. The score on the Men's side was 103-87 Hope, while the visitors won the Women's meet by a score of 128-68.

In swimming, Spencer Johnson won the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.85, while Max Regan was victorious in the Open 50 Free (23.04) and Andrew Brunner came out on top in the Open 100 Fly (54.12). The Scots Men also won the Open 200 Medley with a time of 1:43.12.

For the Women, Jordan Newhouse was recognized for her efforts in the Open 200 IM (2:27.91) and the Open 100 Fly (1:06.72), while Christine Vicari had a personal best in the Open 200 IM with a time of 2:40.32. In addition, Chelsea Hicks had a season best score of 27:63 in the Open 50 Free.

On the diving side, Johnson had a NCAA Qualifying score and set school and pool records in the 3-meter. He recorded a score of 323.40, breaking the old school record of 300.75 and pool mark of 297.60. He also earned praise for his high degree of difficulty dives.

For the Women, Hannah Leestma won both boards, winning the Open 3-meter with a mark of 215.85, and earning the high mark in the Open 1-meter, registering a score of 226.75

More than a third of all Alma students take part in at least one performance each year. The College offers majors in theatre, dance and music, but students of all majors may join in productions. The Remick Heritage Center for the Performing Arts is the region's premiere performing arts facility.

 

Coach Profile

Chris Hamstra

Chris Hamstra

Coach Hamstra graduated from Hope College in 2004 with a B.A. in Accounting. During his time at Hope, Hamstra was a four year student-athlete, received All-MIAA honors and was also named to the All-American team. Hamstra was also a member of MIAA Championship teams and brings that winning attitude and work ethic to his new position.

After graduation, Hamstra served as an assistant coach for Hope’s Swimming and Diving Program under Dr. John Patnott. Hamstra credits Dr. Patnott with helping him to understand the science of swimming and also the importance of season long work out plans. “As an assistant in his program, I was given the freedom to implement my own workouts into the system, providing me with insight into what it takes to develop season long plans.”
