SCOTS MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING FALL SHORT AGAINST CALVIN

Men: Calvin 124, Alma 84
Women: Calvin 137, Alma 86

On Senior Day for the Alma Men and Women Swimmers and Divers, the Scots hosted MIAA rival Calvin College as Steven Rose, Corey White, Geri Gaskell and Sara Swanton had the opportunity to compete one last time in their home pool.

The Women Swimmers and Divers started off the afternoon’s meet in grand form – taking first and second place in the 200-yard medley relay. Next, Jr. Sarah Anderson swam to a first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.33) and Jr. Spencer Johnson won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 22.55. In the 200-IM, Fr. Madison Behmlander had a season best time of 2:28.86 and finished in second place, while So. Jordan Bryde swam a season-best time in her 100-backstroke event (1:04.72) and took second place.

In a very exciting performance, Johnson set a new pool and school record in the 100-yard backstroke. His time of 52.19 is also a provisional NCAA cut and it is the first NCAA cut for an Alma Swimmer in several years.  The national meet is in mid-March and it will be several weeks before the final invite times are sent out.

Swimming in her last meet at her home pool, Sr. Sara Swanton grabbed a second place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:36.59. The Scots also continued to compete well in the breaststroke events. For the women, Fr. Madison Behmlander was first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a season best time of 1:14.31 and So. Shaina Buhl was close behind in a second place time of 1:15.21. For the men, Fr. Max Regan finished in first place with a season-best time of 1:08.15, while Fr. Caige Lauring took fourth place in a time of 1:12.21.

Sr. Steve Rose finished his dual meet diving career with first place finishes and personal record scores in both diving events. Rose posted 247.05 on 1-meter and 260.00 on 3-meter. Also in diving, sophomore Brianna Harfmann set new personal record scores of 240.95 on 1-meter and 249.60 on 3-meter.

After wrapping up the dual meet part of the season, the Scots will now spend the next three weeks with their sights set on performing well at the MIAA Championship, which will take place on February 19th, 20th and 21st in South Bend, IN.

The memory and spiritual ideals of the late Bishop Thomas Makarios remain alive in a figurative sculpture that was dedicated in May 2009 near the center of campus. The Bishop, professor of religious studies at Alma for 25 years, was founder of the American Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Church of India and the first Metropolitan Bishop of Canada, United Kingdom and Europe, and South Africa.
