ALMA SWIMMING AND DIVING COMPETE IN DUAL MEET AT KALAMAZOO

In a tough MIAA dual swimming and diving meet, both the Men's and Women's Team lost to Kalamazoo College on Saturday afternoon in Kalamazoo. The Hornet men defeated the Scots 156-89, while the Lady Scots lost 151-88.

Although the Hornets took an lead early, the Scots did post some top finishes. Sr. Sara Swanton (Saginaw, MI/Heritage) won the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 11:25.71. Jr. Spencer Johnson (Grand Ledge, MI/Grand Ledge) won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 54.12., while Jr. Sarah Anderson (Marshall, MI/Marshall) swam a personal record time of 56.26 to take first place in the 100-yard freestyle. So. Shaina Buhl (Beverly Hills, MI/Regina) grabbed first place in the 200-yard breaststroke with her season best time of 2:42.16. So. Brianna Harfmann (Midland, MI/H.H. Dow) won the 3-meter diving competition with a score of 242.10, setting a new personal record of 239.25 on the one-meter board. In the men’s diving, Sr. Steve Rose (Essexville, MI/Garber) took first place in both the one-meter (225.40) and three-meter (201.75) events. The Lady Scots finished the meet with a solid performance in the 200-freestyle relay finishing in a time of 1:47.86.

Many other standout performances from the Scots were turned in during the meet. So. Andrew Brunner (Traverse City, MI/T.C. St. Francis) recorded a personal best time in the 200-IM (2:05.94). Season best times were turned in by the following:
Fr. Kayleigh Murphy (Huntington Woods, MI/Berkley) - one-meter diving (179.80)
Fr. Holly Oemke (Haslett, MI/Haslett) - 200-yard freestyle (2:19.56)
Fr. Caige Lauring (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Lahser) - 200-yard freestyle (2:04.69)
Fr. Max Marsh (Ypsilanti, MI/Ypsilanti) - 200-yard butterfly (2:11.68)
Fr. Madison Behmlander (Auburn, MI/Bay City Western) - 200-yard breaststroke (2:42.65)
Fr. Max Regan (Lansing/Lansing Eastern) – 200-IM (2:12.20)
So. Jordan Bryde (Mason, MI/Mason) - 200-yard backstroke (2:21.82)
Sr. Geri Gaskell (Greenbush, MI/Oscoda) - 500-yard freestyle (6:28.66)

The Scots will be back in the water on Saturday, January 31st at 1:00 p.m. This will be the Scots’ last dual meet of the 2008-2009 season. All fans are ecncouraged to join the Scots at the McClure Natatorium in Alma, MI, for the meet and the special senior recognition.


 

 

Alma College students have the ability to design their own area of academic concentration, with the assistance of a faculty advisor, to meet specific educational or career goals. In recent years, students have graduated with Programs of Emphasis majors in such fields as arts management, archaeology and anthropology, environmental policy and community advocacy, Foreign Service and international law, and music technology and digital media.

Chris Hamstra

Chris Hamstra

Coach Hamstra graduated from Hope College in 2004 with a B.A. in Accounting. During his time at Hope, Hamstra was a four year student-athlete, received All-MIAA honors and was also named to the All-American team. Hamstra was also a member of MIAA Championship teams and brings that winning attitude and work ethic to his new position.

After graduation, Hamstra served as an assistant coach for Hope’s Swimming and Diving Program under Dr. John Patnott. Hamstra credits Dr. Patnott with helping him to understand the science of swimming and also the importance of season long work out plans. “As an assistant in his program, I was given the freedom to implement my own workouts into the system, providing me with insight into what it takes to develop season long plans.”
