SCOTS MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING HOSTED ALBION ON SATURDAY

The Alma College hosted the Albion College Brits on Saturday and the Scots worked hard but fell to the Britons by a final score of 191.5 to 78.5 on the women’s side and 155 to 124 on the men’s side.
The Scots swimmers managed to come away with some top finishes. Freshman Madison Behmlander (Auburn, MI) took second place with a season best time of 2:30.18 in the 200-yard IM. Sophomore Maricat Eggenberger (Canton, MI) had a strong swim in the 500-yard freestyle. She took second place in her season best time of 6:05.25. Sophomore Andrew Brunner (Traverse City, MI) and junior Spencer Johnson (Grand Ledge, MI) both had two first place finishes. Brunner swam 200-yard butterfly in a winning time of 2:10.03 and swam the 200-yard IM in a winning time of 2:09.45. Johnson got a personal best time of 48.87 to win the 100-yard freestyle and has a time of 2:07.97 in the 200-yard backstroke. Freshman Max Marsh (Ypsilanti, MI) won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 56.22. And in an exciting finish to the meet, the Alma men (Johnson, Marsh, Regan and Brunner) won the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:31.29).

The Scots divers had an outstanding competition day. For the women, Brianna Harfmann (Midland, MI) led the way with personal bests in both events. She took first place on the 3-meter with a score of 244.25 and took second place on the 1-meter with a score of 237.50. For the men, senior Steve Rose (Essexville, MI) was second on the 1-meter with a season best score of 240.50 and was second on the 3-meter with a score of 194.60. Sophomore Dustin Conlin (Galesburg, MI) had a personal best score of 200.00 on the 1-meter and freshman Kirk Reed (Mason, MI) had a personal best score of 156.95 on the 3-meter.

Next for the Scots swimmers is a trip to the Depauw Invitational in Greencastle, Indiana on December 5th and 6th. The Scots divers will head to Eastern Michigan University to compete in a two day diving invitational on the same weekend.

Alma College students report levels of educational experiences and faculty interaction that exceed the national norms by significant amounts, according to the findings of the 2007 National Survey of Student Engagement. In the 2006 study, Alma students reported a level of interaction with faculty that ranked among the top five percent in the nation.

Chris Hamstra

Chris Hamstra

Coach Hamstra graduated from Hope College in 2004 with a B.A. in Accounting. During his time at Hope, Hamstra was a four year student-athlete, received All-MIAA honors and was also named to the All-American team. Hamstra was also a member of MIAA Championship teams and brings that winning attitude and work ethic to his new position.

After graduation, Hamstra served as an assistant coach for Hope’s Swimming and Diving Program under Dr. John Patnott. Hamstra credits Dr. Patnott with helping him to understand the science of swimming and also the importance of season long work out plans. “As an assistant in his program, I was given the freedom to implement my own workouts into the system, providing me with insight into what it takes to develop season long plans."
