SWIMMING & DIVING: Post Season Team Awards Announced

Alma, Mi.- Alma College Swimming and Diving Team celebrated a successful 2007-2008 season with a banquet on March 16, 2008. Seven swimmers and divers were honored with special team awards.

Sophomore diver Hanna Leestma (Royal Oak) received Female MVP. Sophomore swimmer and diver Spencer Johnson (Grand Ledge) received Male MVP. Freshmen Brianna Harfmann (Midland) and Andrew Brunner (Traverse City) were named Rookies of the Year. The honor of Most Improved was given to two swimmers - junior Sara Swanton (Saginaw) and senior Geri Gaskell (Oscoda).  Freshman swimmer Shaina Buhl (St. Clair Shores) was awarded the honor of being Most Inspirational. Head coach Chris Hamstra completed the award ceremony by honoring freshman swimmer Christine Vicari (Grand Rapids) with The Coachâ��s Award. In addition to these awards, Sara Swanton, Geri Gaskell, Corey White and Spencer Johnson were named Team Captians for the upcoming 2008-2009 season.  

 

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble performed at the prestigious Centrum Jazz Festival, an international festival in Port Townsend, Wash., in July 2007. Alma was the only college group invited to perform. “It’s a huge honor,” says faculty director Dave Zerbe. “You can’t apply to perform there; they seek you out.”

Chris Hamstra

Coach Hamstra graduated from Hope College in 2004 with a B.A. in Accounting. During his time at Hope, Hamstra was a four year student-athlete, received All-MIAA honors and was also named to the All-American team. Hamstra was also a member of MIAA Championship teams and brings that winning attitude and work ethic to his new position.

After graduation, Hamstra served as an assistant coach for Hope’s Swimming and Diving Program under Dr. John Patnott. Hamstra credits Dr. Patnott with helping him to understand the science of swimming and also the importance of season long work out plans. “As an assistant in his program, I was given the freedom to implement my own workouts into the system, providing me with insight into what it takes to develop season long plans."
