SWIMMING & DIVING: Scots Have Good Showing in Last Dual Match of Season

On Saturday, February 2, 2008, the Alma College Swimmers and Divers competed in their last dual meet of the 2007-2008 season. The Scots gave it their all in a tough match up with Calvin College. The final score for the women was Calvin 153, Alma 109. The final score on the men’s side was Calvin 127, Alma 93. The Scot Women end their season with an overall record of 2-7 and the men post an overall record of 1-7.

Senior Emily Smith led the way on the women’s side posting a season best time of 2:36.63 to take the first place spot in the 200-yard breaststroke. Smith also came away with second place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.45). Junior Sara Swanton grabbed a first place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:25.52. In 1-meter diving, Hanna Leestma took third place and got a personal best and NCAA qualifying score of 245.60. While teammates Brianna Harfmann and Bailey Buyak also both got personal best scores of 230.45 and 149.00. In the 3-meter event, Leestma took second (232.50) and Harfmann followed in third (231.95).

Sophomore Spencer Johnson had two standout swims on the men’s side – taking first place in both the 100-yard backstroke (54.99) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.89). Junior Corey White was second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.91). Freshman Andrew Brunner took second place in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.67) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:25.88). Junior diver Steve Rose got second in the 1-meter event with a score of 226.20.

The swimmers and divers are headed into the final stretch of their season. They have this weekend off from competition and then head to the MIAA Championship Meet. The championship meet will be held February 14th, 15th and 16th at the Holland Aquatic Center in Holland, Michigan. Chris Hamstra

Chris Hamstra

Coach Hamstra graduated from Hope College in 2004 with a B.A. in Accounting. During his time at Hope, Hamstra was a four year student-athlete, received All-MIAA honors and was also named to the All-American team. Hamstra was also a member of MIAA Championship teams and brings that winning attitude and work ethic to his new position.

After graduation, Hamstra served as an assistant coach for Hope’s Swimming and Diving Program under Dr. John Patnott. Hamstra credits Dr. Patnott with helping him to understand the science of swimming and also the importance of season long work out plans. “As an assistant in his program, I was given the freedom to implement my own workouts into the system, providing me with insight into what it takes to develop season long plans."
