SWIMMING & DIVING: Scots Continue to Improve in Last Home match

The Alma College Swimming and Diving Team had a tough day of competition as they competed against Kalamazoo College on Saturday, January 26th. In their last home meet of the season, the Scot Women fell to the Hornet Women with a score of 126 to 98 and the Scot Men lost with a score of 126 to 71.

Despite the losses, the Scots had an enjoyable day. Fans packed the stands to support the team and cheered them on to many personal best and season best times and scores. The day began with Senior Recognition honoring the teams three seniors Geri Gaskell, Nate McDonald and Emily Smith.

Junior Sara Swanton continued to post faster times bringing in personal bests in both the 1000-yard freestyle (11:25.56) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:35.03). Senior Emily Smith grabbed her season best time of 1:12.65 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Sophomore diver Hanna Leestma won both the women’s diving events and got a NCAA qualifying score of 269.20 on 3-meter. The Scot women’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Paulson, Anderson, Vicari and Smith ended the meet with a big win and season best time of 1:46.30.

In a close 200-yard IM race, freshman Andrew Brunner finished in second place with a time of 2:07.30. Brunner came back later in the meet to take a first place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.35. Sophomore Spencer Johnson dominated the 100-yard backstroke event – getting a season best time of 54.51. Johnson also wowed the crowd with his 3-meter diving skills. He had the highest 3-meter score of the meet posting a 254.10.

Next the AC swimmers and divers head to Grand Rapids for their final dual meet of the 2007-2008 season. ACSD swims against Calvin College on Saturday, February 2nd at the East Grand Rapids High School. The meet begins at 1:00pm.

Chris Hamstra

Chris Hamstra

Coach Hamstra graduated from Hope College in 2004 with a B.A. in Accounting. During his time at Hope, Hamstra was a four year student-athlete, received All-MIAA honors and was also named to the All-American team. Hamstra was also a member of MIAA Championship teams and brings that winning attitude and work ethic to his new position.

After graduation, Hamstra served as an assistant coach for Hope’s Swimming and Diving Program under Dr. John Patnott. Hamstra credits Dr. Patnott with helping him to understand the science of swimming and also the importance of season long work out plans. “As an assistant in his program, I was given the freedom to implement my own workouts into the system, providing me with insight into what it takes to develop season long plans."
