The Alma College Swimmers and Divers enjoyed fun and intense competition as they competed against Olivet College on January 19th. The Alma women lost in a close meet with a score of 103-100. The Alma men fell to the Olivet men 115-76.

The AC swimmer's day was highlighted by six individual first place finishes, four of which came on the women's side of the meet. Sophomore Sarah Anderson won the 50-yard freestyle (26.77), senior Emily Smith won the 400-yard IM (5:27.47) and junior Sara Swanton won the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.55). Smith also had a great swim in the 100-yard breaststroke finishing in first place and with a season best time of 1:12.95.

The AC divers had a tremendous afternoon. Hanna Leestma took first place on both boards with a personal best score of 238.00 on 1-meter and a score of 241.80 on 3-meter. Brianna Harfmann secured second place finishes on both boards with a personal best score of 222.35 on 1-meter and 225.65 on 3-meter. In the men’s diving, junior Steve Rose took first place on the 1-meter (230.90) and sophomore Spencer Johnson took first place on the 3-meter (208.60).

Freshman Andrew Brunner continued his swimming success with wins and season best times in the 100-yard butterfly (54.77) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.67).

Despite the over-all loses, the day was marked by some spectacular swims by the AC swimmers. Almost every event included a personal best or season best time.  Head Coach Chris Hamstra says, “It was a very positive weekend. We had a lot of fast swims which should help us build momentum as we lead up to the MIAA Championship Meet.”

The Alma Swimmer and Divers will be back in the water on Saturday, January 26th for their last home meet of the season. The Scots will face the Kalamazoo College Hornets at 1:00pm at McClure Natatorium. The ACSD senior recognition will start at 12:50pm.

Women's: Olivet 103, Alma 100

Men's: Olivet 115, Alma 76

Alma is one of seven Michigan colleges and universities to hold membership in the Omicron Delta Kappa Society, the national leadership society that recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership and exemplary character.
