SWIMMING & DIVING: Scots Get First Taste of Victory

Alma, Mi.- The second half of the swimming and diving season began on a high note on Saturday as the Alma College Swimmers and Divers captured three wins in dual meets against University of Findlay and Wheeling Jesuit University. The Alma women swept the competition with a score of 60-52 over Findlay and a score of 86-52 over Wheeling. The Alma men lost to the Findlay men with a score of 65-44 but beat the Wheeling men with a score of 61-38. The Scots Women improve their record to 2-4 overall and the Scots Men improve to 1-4 overall.
The Lady Scots got the meet started with a bang as they won the 400-medley relay with freshman Jordan Bryde, freshman Shaina Buhl, sophomore Elaina Paulson and senior Emily Smith turning in a time of 4:35.70. Junior Sara Swanton swam a personal best time of 11:30.69 in the 1000-yard freestyle and a season best time of 5:37.98 in the 500-yard freestyle. Swanton also won the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:28.77. In the diving competition, sophomore Hanna Leestma added two more wins to her impressive season. She scored 233.80 on 3-meter and a personal best score of 225.00 on 1-meter. The women finished the meet by taking a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:07.06).
The successful day was marked by many other personal and season bests. Freshman Maricat Eggenberger had a season best in the 200-yard freestyle (2:17.54). Freshman Shaina Buhl had a personal best in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:51.82).
In the men’s competition, freshman Andrew Brunner showed off his skills with three first place finishes and season bests in the 200-yard IM (2:08.54), the 200-yard butterfly (2:09.05), and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.92). Junior diver Steve Rose helped bring in points for the Scots with wins in both the 1-meter (230.90) and 3-meter (226.00) competitions. Freshman David DeLine got a personal best time of 11:07.51 in the 1000-yard freestyle and a season best time of 5:22.07 in the 500-yard freestyle. Sophomore Spencer Johnson also grabbed a season best time of 1:52.18 in the 200-yard freestyle.
This weekend, the Scots will travel to Olivet, Mi. to take on the Olivet College Comets on Saturday, January 19. The meet will begin at 1:00 p.m.
