Written By: Channing Kimball, Alma College Diving Coach

On December 8, 2007, Alma College held their second home meet with a dual against St. Mary’s College. This conference match up was a make-up for the meet that was canceled on November 9th. Although a small team with only 14 girls, Alma Lady Scots have been competing and posting winning times since beginning their season on October 27th. However numbers proved to be a tough obstacle to overcome in this meet, and the Lady Scots lost to the Belles in a final score of 181-111.

Junior Sara Swanton (Saginaw/Heritage) led the Lady Scots with a first place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:26.83 and a second place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with time of 5:39.44. Freshman Christine Vicari (Grand Rapids/Catholic Central) showed her sprinting abilities by swimming to a first place in 50-yard freestyle (27.29).  Senior Emily Smith (Adrian) turned in a first place time of 2:41.77 in the 200-yard breastroke.  Other top finishes were made by sophomore Sarah Anderson (Marshall), who took second in100-yard freestyle (57.68), and sophomore Elaina Paulson (St. Joseph), who took second in the100 yard-butterfly (1:08.77).

Strong performances were turned in by sophomore diver Hanna Leestma (Royal Oak/Kimball) and freshman diver Brianna Harfmann (Midland/H. H. Dow). Leestma took first place on both boards with scores of 222.55 on the 1-meter and 212.00 on the 3-meter. Harfmann placed second on 1-meter with a score of 207.5 and third on 3-meter with a score of 183.75.

Alma Lady Scots Buhl, Anderson, Smith, and Vicari finished the meet with an exciting win in the 200-yard freestyle relay – touching out the Belles in a time of 1:46.77.

Next the Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Team travel to Ft. Pierce, Florida to train at the Indian River Community College. During this week-long intense training trip, the Scots will have a dual meet against Keene State College from New Hampshire.

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term ‘07 students explored important cultural sites in China, worked to restore a Jewish Holocaust cemetery in Poland, analyzed ethic politics in Scotland, and studied medieval literature in London.
