DIVING: Scots Compete at Zippy Invitational

December 3, 2007
The Alma College Divers traveled to The University of Akron in Akron, Ohio to compete in the Zippy Invitational over the past weekend. With a mix of Division I and Division II teams, the two-day diving meet provided a challenging field of competition.  But the Alma divers held their own and proved that they can compete at a higher level.

Coach Channing Kimball said, “I knew this would be a tough meet. I wanted my divers to see competition outside of our conference and outside of Michigan. I wanted them to see some better divers throwing big dives and to open their eyes to what is possible in their own diving. We were completely immersed in diving this weekend, and it was fun!”

Dustin Conlin, a freshman that had never dove before this year, stepped up and showed off his natural talent with a very strong 3-meter list. He finished in 9th place with a score of 150.70.  Hanna Leestma led the AC women with a 14th place finish on the 1-meter and a 16th place finish on the 3-meter.

“I saw some huge improvements on individual dives, and I saw a lot that can be worked on,” says Coach Kimball. “We are not going to see competition any harder than we saw in Akron.  Now just need to use what we learned this weekend and focus on the next steps.”

The next step for the women is a home dual meet against St. Mary’s College (a make-up meet from November 9th), and then both the men and women swimmers and divers head to Ft. Pierce, Florida for a winter training trip.

Since 2003, twenty-three Alma College students have won prestigious national fellowships, scholarships and awards, including 13 Fulbright fellowships and multiple Udall, Truman, Marshall and Gates-Cambridge scholarships.
