SWIMMING & DIVING: Swim School

ALMA COLLEGE SWIM SCHOOL

Saturday Mornings from 10:15 to 11am
September 15th - October 13TH

…taught by members of the Alma College Men’s and Women’s Swimming Teams,under the supervision of the Varsity Coaching Staff. The purpose of the school is to
give individualized instruction to children & adults. The program is for ages five (5)
and up. Classes last 35-40 minutes, and each class involves a daily swimming
demonstration.

WHEN: Each Saturday for five weeks, starting September 15 and ending October
13. Class is offered from 10:15am to 11:00am.

WHERE: Alma College Swim Complex in the Hogan Physical Education Building
– 614 W. Superior Street, Alma

COST: Swimming lessons are $10 per semi-private lesson. Educators receive 10%
off, police fire and military 15% off , and second child 25% off.
A swim lesson program for all levels of swimming ability…

Swimming Levels:

1. Non-Swimmer

2. Beginner: Puts face in water, can swim ten feet.

3. Advanced Beginner: Swims approximately 25 yards free with face in the water and backstroke.

4. Intermediate: Can complete at least 25 yards free and back. This level introduces butterfly and
breaststroke.

5. Advanced: Can complete at least 100 yards of free and/or back. This level provides instruction on proper
technique of all 4 strokes.

6. Stroke Technique: Has the endurance for 400 consecutive yards and can perform at least 50 yards of all 4
strokes. This level emphasizes on correct technique in order to make the swimmer more efficient.

Chris Hamstra

Chris Hamstra

Coach Hamstra graduated from Hope College in 2004 with a B.A. in Accounting. During his time at Hope, Hamstra was a four year student-athlete, received All-MIAA honors and was also named to the All-American team. Hamstra was also a member of MIAA Championship teams and brings that winning attitude and work ethic to his new position.

After graduation, Hamstra served as an assistant coach for Hope’s Swimming and Diving Program under Dr. John Patnott. Hamstra credits Dr. Patnott with helping him to understand the science of swimming and also the importance of season long work out plans. “As an assistant in his program, I was given the freedom to implement my own workouts into the system, providing me with insight into what it takes to develop season long plans."
