Caylee Coe, Sara Swanton Lead As Scots Fall to Olivet

ALMA, Mich.
- It was senior day at McClure Natatorium and the Alma College women's swimming and diving team lost to Olivet College 155-86. Olivet is currently ranked 23rd in the nation.

Despite the team loss, individuals had outstanding performances on the day as Caylee Coe (Owosso) was a dual event winner in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:44.54 and the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:08.61. Emily Smith (Adrian) was an event winner, taking the top spot in the 200 individual medley, touching out in 2:20.61. Sara Swanton (Saginaw/Heritage) finished second in the 100 fly with a time of 1:08.99.

The meet began with Alma's 200 medley relay team of Coe, Smith, Swanton and Elaina Paulson (St. Joseph) finishing second with a time of 2:04.78.

Swanton then took the top spot in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 11:37.30, over one minute quicker than her nearest competition.

Smith finished second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:16.61 to highlight the lineup for the Scots. Both Lora Trzeciak (Allen Park) and Paulson pulled through in the 50 free, scoring points with third and fourth place finishes, respectively. Paulson followed up with strong performances on the one and three-meter boards, finishing second on the one-meter with a score of 204.60 and on the three-meter board with a score of 199.40.

Trzeciak was third in the 100 free, touching the wall in 1:01.66 to round out top performances for the Maroon and Cream.

Alma returns to action Saturday, Jan. 27 when it travels to Hope College for a 1 p.m. meet.

 

The Alma College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team claimed its eighth consecutive regional championship at the SIFE USA Regional Competition in March 2008. The competition awards the SIFE teams that are most effective in teaching the principals of market economics through outreach projects in their communities.

Chris Hamstra

Coach Hamstra graduated from Hope College in 2004 with a B.A. in Accounting. During his time at Hope, Hamstra was a four year student-athlete, received All-MIAA honors and was also named to the All-American team. Hamstra was also a member of MIAA Championship teams and brings that winning attitude and work ethic to his new position.

After graduation, Hamstra served as an assistant coach for Hope’s Swimming and Diving Program under Dr. John Patnott. Hamstra credits Dr. Patnott with helping him to understand the science of swimming and also the importance of season long work out plans. “As an assistant in his program, I was given the freedom to implement my own workouts into the system, providing me with insight into what it takes to develop season long plans."
