Spencer Johnson Dual Event Winner As Scots Host Olivet

ALMA, Mich. - On senior day at McClure Natatorium, Alma College Swimming & Diving fell to Olivet College 216-63. The women lost the dual meet 155-86 to the Comets.

Though the team did not meet success Saturday, an array of Scots found themselves event winners as freshman Spencer Johnson (Grand Ledge) won both the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.91 and the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:04.75 to lead the Scots in points. Johnson added a third place 50 free finish with a time of 23.70, adding three points to the team effort.

Senior Brent Gostomski (Trenton) took top honors in the 100 butterfly in his final appearance in his home pool, touching out in 56.01.

Luke Livingston (Trenton) finished second in the 1,000 free, scoring four points with a time of 10:56.45 and Matt Davis (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) finished second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:13.67. Livingston and Davis finished third/fourth in the 500 freestyle with times of 5:20.28 and 5:23.60, respectively.

Gostomski turned in a third place finish in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:10.59. The day ended with the 200 free relay team of Nate McDonald (Oscoda), Corey White (Grand Blanc), Livingston and Gostomski finishing third in the event with a time of 1:36.12.

Alma returns to the pool Saturday, Jan. 27 when it travels to Hope College for a 1 p.m. meet.

 

Students conducting research side-by-side with faculty has been an Alma legacy for generations. Alma students team up with faculty on scholarly research or to collaborate on creative or performing arts projects. An annual Honors Day features student presentations, performances and exhibits. Many students present such work at regional, national and international meetings.

Chris Hamstra

Chris Hamstra

Coach Hamstra graduated from Hope College in 2004 with a B.A. in Accounting. During his time at Hope, Hamstra was a four year student-athlete, received All-MIAA honors and was also named to the All-American team. Hamstra was also a member of MIAA Championship teams and brings that winning attitude and work ethic to his new position.

After graduation, Hamstra served as an assistant coach for Hope’s Swimming and Diving Program under Dr. John Patnott. Hamstra credits Dr. Patnott with helping him to understand the science of swimming and also the importance of season long work out plans. “As an assistant in his program, I was given the freedom to implement my own workouts into the system, providing me with insight into what it takes to develop season long plans."
