Alma Opens MIAA Schedule With Loss to Calvin

ALMA, Mich. - The Alma College men's swimming and diving season began as the Scots lost to Calvin College 128-72 Saturday afternoon in McClure Natatorium. With five weeks of training under new coaching - head coach Kyle Schack joined the Scots this fall - the team found the kinks that need to be worked out over the course of the season. Despite the loss, Schack is confident that the team showed strength and that this is a new era in Scot swimming and diving.

Steve Rose (Essexville/Garber) was stellar on the one and three-meter boards, winning the one-meter with a score of 208.60 and the three-meter with a score of 190.45.

In the 50 free, Nate McDonald took first, touching out in 24.23. The 400 medley relay team of Spencer Johnson, Trevor McCann, Brent Gostomski and Matt Davis won the event with a time of 3:51.71. The 100 back saw Johnson win in 57.50 and Gostomski finish second with a time of 58.80. McCann was first in the 100 breast, touching the wall in 1:09.68.

Meet highlights include two lifetime best times and 10 unshaved best times. While the team would like to see some fater times, even this early in the year, some adjustments will be made to race plans and discipline in practice entering upcoming events.

“Finishing races was something we talked about before the meet and now we need to stay focused on being in the race at the beginning and doing a better job of building the front of the race," noted Schack following the races.

Alma returns to action Nov. 4 when it travels to Kalamazoo.

Alma’s “green” residence hall, Wright Hall, was completed in January 2005. The modern, 60-bed apartment-style hall features a number of environmentally friendly features, including geothermal heating and cooling, recycled-content ceiling tiles and carpeting, energy-efficient windows, rooftop solar heating panels, energy-efficient showers and washing machines, and a computerized energy monitoring system.
