Alma Edges Out St. Mary's To Finish Sixth at MIAA Championships

The women's swimming and diving team finished sixth, narrowly defeating St. Mary's, at the MIAA Championships. The Scots scored 89 team points as Calvin repeated as MIAA Champions with 621.5 points.

Individually, Emily Dolan and Emily Smith finished 10th and 11th in the 100 breast, respectively, to score team points for the Scots. Caylee Coe was 12th in the 100 back to score a point, touching the wall in 1:06.18.

In one meter diving, Ivyrose Hess finished 12th with a score of 267.60.

The 800 free relay team of Sara Swanton, Jaci Wilkie, Coe and Audrey Sloan finished fifth with a time of 8:49.20.

In the 200 breast, three different swimmers finished in the top 12 as Emily Smith was ninth with a time of 2:39.31 while Wilkie was 10th in 2:41.06 and Emily Dolan was 12th with a time of 2:41.94.

The 200 free relay team of Caylee Coe, Emily Smith, Emily Dolan and Lora Trzeciak touched out in 1:47.21 for 18 team points. The 400 medley relay team of Coe, Smith, Sara Swanton and Dolan finished sixth with a combined time of 4:25.82

Chris Hamstra

Chris Hamstra

Coach Hamstra graduated from Hope College in 2004 with a B.A. in Accounting. During his time at Hope, Hamstra was a four year student-athlete, received All-MIAA honors and was also named to the All-American team. Hamstra was also a member of MIAA Championship teams and brings that winning attitude and work ethic to his new position.

After graduation, Hamstra served as an assistant coach for Hope’s Swimming and Diving Program under Dr. John Patnott. Hamstra credits Dr. Patnott with helping him to understand the science of swimming and also the importance of season long work out plans. “As an assistant in his program, I was given the freedom to implement my own workouts into the system, providing me with insight into what it takes to develop season long plans."
