Alma Falls to Olivet, 164-47

OLIVET, Mich. - Alma women's swimming traveled to Olivet Friday for a make-up meet and lost to the Comets, 164-47.

The 400 medley relay team of Caylee Coe, Emily Smith, Rosemary Dutka and Emily Dolan took second in the meet's opening event, touching out in 4:30.00. Coe turned in a third place performance on her own in the 1,000 free with a time of 12:13.40.

Sara Swanton finished third in the 200 free, touching the wall in 2:14.33 while Smith was third in the 50 free in 27.48. Dolan was third in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:31.97. Alyssa Gooch, Ivyrose Hess and Katie Porter placed third, fourth and fifth, respectively in one-meter diving.

Emily Smith took second in the 100 free in 59.66 and Dolan again placed in the 200 breast, taking second with a time of 2:45.79.

Alma hosts Hope in its final home meet of the season Saturday (Jan. 28).

 

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble performed at the prestigious Centrum Jazz Festival, an international festival in Port Townsend, Wash., in July 2007. Alma was the only college group invited to perform. “It’s a huge honor,” says faculty director Dave Zerbe. “You can’t apply to perform there; they seek you out.”

Chris Hamstra

Chris Hamstra

Coach Hamstra graduated from Hope College in 2004 with a B.A. in Accounting. During his time at Hope, Hamstra was a four year student-athlete, received All-MIAA honors and was also named to the All-American team. Hamstra was also a member of MIAA Championship teams and brings that winning attitude and work ethic to his new position.

After graduation, Hamstra served as an assistant coach for Hope’s Swimming and Diving Program under Dr. John Patnott. Hamstra credits Dr. Patnott with helping him to understand the science of swimming and also the importance of season long work out plans. “As an assistant in his program, I was given the freedom to implement my own workouts into the system, providing me with insight into what it takes to develop season long plans."
