ALMA, Mich.
- Saturday, Nov. 6, the Alma College Scots swimming and diving teams will host the Albion Britons at 1 p.m., at Alma College’s McClure Natatorium. Alma’s men’s and women’s teams are both coming from a season-opening loss against Calvin on Oct. 30. Albion’s women’s team is also coming off a season-opening loss against Kalamazoo while the men’s team is coming from its first win of the season, 165-64, over Kalamazoo.

The current standings in the MIAA for men’s swimming and diving show Albion, Calvin and Hope undefeated with records of 1-0 while Alma, Kalamazoo and Olivet look for their first MIAA wins. Last year Alma ended the season sixth in the conference and Albion finished third.

The current standings for the women’s swimming and diving in the MIAA show Hope atop the conference standings with a 2-0 record while Calvin and Kalamazoo are both 1-0. Olivet carries an even 1-1 record while Albion, Alma and St. Mary’s look for their first team victory of the season. Last season, Alma finished just ahead of the Brits, ending the season in fifth place while Albion finished sixth.

Both teams are returning a majority of swimmers but have also incorporated some fresh talent. Alma’s men’s team has four freshmen while the women’s team has eight newcomers. Albion’s men’s team has six freshmen on a team of 23 and the women’s has 12.

Sophomore Lindsay Brown returns for Albion after earning All-MIAA honors in 2004, setting a new record on the one-meter with 367.15 points. Albion’s men’s team also returns two All-MIAA selections – junior John Frodell and sophomore Dan Fradeneck.

With the new season upon them and both teams building on their programs from last year, Saturday should prove to be a good match-up. The Scots and the Brits face off at 1 p.m., as the Maroon and Cream carry the hopes of bringing a win early in the 2004-05 season.

Alma College students are annual high achievers in the national Model United Nations competition. Alma has received Outstanding Delegation awards in each of the last 12 years (1997 through 2008) at the world’s largest and most prestigious collegiate Model UN Conference in New York City.

Chris Hamstra

Chris Hamstra

Coach Hamstra graduated from Hope College in 2004 with a B.A. in Accounting. During his time at Hope, Hamstra was a four year student-athlete, received All-MIAA honors and was also named to the All-American team. Hamstra was also a member of MIAA Championship teams and brings that winning attitude and work ethic to his new position.

After graduation, Hamstra served as an assistant coach for Hope’s Swimming and Diving Program under Dr. John Patnott. Hamstra credits Dr. Patnott with helping him to understand the science of swimming and also the importance of season long work out plans. “As an assistant in his program, I was given the freedom to implement my own workouts into the system, providing me with insight into what it takes to develop season long plans."
