SCOTS SOFTBALL DROPS GAME TO ILLINOIS WESLEYAN BY A SCORE OF 6-3 ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON
The Alma Softball team took on the #2 seed and host Illinois Wesleyan University Titans on Friday afternoon and dropped a 6-3 decision. The game was about an hour behind schedule because of a delay for lightning in the first contest. The Scots, the #3 seed in the NCAA Regional, are now 1-1 in the tournament.Alma will now play an elimination game against Concordia (WI) later on Friday. The Scots defeated Concordia yesterday by a score of 4-1, but the Falcons defeated St. Norbert's earlier on Friday to stay alive.
Wesleyan jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning of off Alma P Brittany Grys (Portland, MI/Portland ) on three hits, including two doubles. The Scots were hurt by two errors that made two of the runs unearned in the frame.
Alma cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the second, as 2B Kasey Miller (Grand Ledge, MI/Grand Ledge) and RF Sarah Johnson (Portland, MI/Portland) walked to lead off the inning. The runners advanced a base on a passed ball and after a strikeout and a ground-out, Sr. 3B Trista Geier (Livonia, MI/Walled Lake Western) reached on an error by the third baseman, scoring both runners.
Grys retired nine Titan batters in a row until a single with one out in the fourth inning, and did not give up another run until the top of the fifth. The Titans increased their lead to 5-2 on three hits, including a double that scored two and Illinois Wesleyan was six outs away from the win.
Sr. P Katie Koechling (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton) ptiched the final two innings for the Scots and gave up one run on two hits that gave Illinois Wesleyan a four-run advantage heading into the bottom half of the last inning.
Alma scored the final run of the game, when Fr. P Emily Ross (Buchanan,MI/Buchanan) homered to left center, cutting the lead to 6-3, but the Scots were not able to get any closer and fell to the Titans.
Grys pitched five innings, allowing seven hits, three earned runs and struck out two batters. Alma was only able to muster two hits on the afternoon, both of them coming from Ross.
